The Real Reason Behind Hope Solo | Hope Solo

Hope Solo was an American female soccer goalkeeper during the early part of the 20th century. She was primarily a right back but played left back in her international days. She played her entire career with the United States women's team from 2021 to the present, and is a two-time Olympic and World Cup gold medalist. In her career, Solo made over 200 saves, which ranks second all-time behind goalkeeper Courtenay Dempsey. She is one of just a handful of players in the history of the game to have that many saves in a single game. As she did not start every match, it is clear that Hope Solo has the skill to be a top goalkeeper in the world.

Solo was born in Southern California and has always stated that she feels most comfortable in the outdoors. She was an all state soccer player as a kid and was named the nation's all star team in each of the states of California, Arizona and Nevada. While playing for the Trojans, Solo made 14 saves against the United States squad. This is the record for most saves in a game by an American woman.

After graduating from Penn State University in 2021, Solo signed free agent deals with teams in Europe, South America and Australia. She played her developmental years with the MetroStars of the United States Women's National Team. Injuries limited her to just two matches over the course of her career, both of which were played in the United States. Injuries also prevented Solo from participating in the U.S. Men's National Team, which is notable because Solo would have been an obvious choice to play on the roster due to her age (born in Germany). Solo is one of only two Americans to play in Europe, as she was chosen to represent the U.S. at the International Soccer Federation (OCF) World Cup in East Africa in 2021.

Solo now has five appearances for the United States Women's National Team, all of which came against other top-level countries such as England, Brazil and Germany. Despite being listed as a right back, Solo has actually been used as a left back on a few occasions, mostly due to the presence of Ashley Joyner. For the most part, Solo has impressed the coaches with her skill on the ball, although her decision making has also been questioned over the years. A defensive player by nature, Solo does not have a natural ability to score goals, although she has scored a handful of goals over her five US National Team appearances.

Outside of the US, Solo has made an even bigger impact in South American soccer. Playing for teams in Peru, Brazil and Venezuela, Solo has become known as one of the best attacking players in the world. She is currently second in the all-time World Cup scoring list, behind only legends Marta Maradona (Argentinian) and Ronaldo (Portugal), but she is well behind the other team leaders in terms of overall career achievements, including bronze during the 1996 Olympics.

Whether you are a fan or an aspiring soccer player, Hope Solo is definitely worth checking out. Her name alone is enough to turn any football fan into a fan, but that alone should not be the sole determining factor when choosing a player to follow on the pitch. Soccer is a very fast-paced sport that requires a great deal of skill and dedication on the part of the athlete. Solo has displayed all of her abilities both on and off the field since joining the USWNT, but her time on the pitch will be much more than just a test to see how good she is at playing the game.
