Hope Solo is a former American football goalkeeper. She has been a backup goalkeeper for the US women's national football team since 2000 to the present, and is a two-time Olympic silver medalist and world cup winner. She started playing soccer at an early age, and her parents always encouraged her passion for the game, despite the fact that she lacked the strength and agility of a normal athlete. She trained with the hope of becoming an actress or a dancer, but was instead drawn towards her football career. She graduated from Penn State University in 2001 and signed with the MetroStars in the beginning of her professional career.
Solo was excellent during her college career, earning All-American honors as a senior. However, after choosing to pursue a career in coaching, she found that soccer was more appealing to her. This led to her first full season as a coach at South Florida's IMFC Palm Beach, where she guided the team to a 2-4 record and eighth place finish in the MAC's Atlantic Division. Solo then transferred to Chivas USA in search of a head coach position, but was out of contract at the time. In her time away from the game, she found writing, directing, and performing in shows and commercials earned her a second contract with IMFC.
Solo made history again in her first season with Chivas USA, however, when she became the first ever player to represent the US women's national team. This was an enormous feat in itself, as only Americans were allowed to play soccer in the Olympics, and Solo certainly made history by representing the US in the sport's first ever World Cup tournament. Her goal in helping the US to reach its first World Cup in over twenty years proved that she was one of the nation's brightest stars, but her selection in the Olympics set the bar for women's soccer, as the next generation's icons would soon be joining her in the line of fire. She went on to help the Americans to their second World Cup victory in four years, and once again became a popular favorite in the US soccer fan base.
Hope Solo has not stopped from the great career she began when she became a star playing soccer in the United States. She has moved on to coaching, helping to turn Chivas USA into a world power, as they finished second in their division this past season. She is also in the process of signing a deal to play for Ecuador in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Her dream of playing in the Olympics is now becoming a reality, as the US Women's National Team qualified for the right to represent the US in the games scheduled for them later this year. Solo is confident she can bring the same level of play to the field that she did for her soccer career, which earned her two NCAA national titles and three Soccer Writers' Hall of Fame titles. She is sure to become one of the best coaches in the country when she is given the chance.
Regardless of how far Solo goes in her career, she has definitely gained a tremendous amount of knowledge about the game of soccer from her time with the Chivas USA team. Soccer has always been a big part of her life, so it should be no surprise that she enjoys the sport just as much as the fans do. She has already proven that she knows what she is doing, as she was able to get the Chivas USA team from being an expansion team to one that is considered among the top teams in the world today. Hope Solo has the hunger and drive to make a name for herself in the world of soccer, and she is ready for that challenge.
There is no doubt that Hope Solo has all the talent to become a top player in the world, but she needs some time to develop her skills and learn how to play against the best players in the world. One thing that the new coach and soccer fans in the US are glad is that Solo is willing to do whatever it takes, including giving her 100% effort, to help her teams succeed. That type of dedication is needed if Solo is ever going to become a top player in the world. She is definitely on her way, and that is why we're so excited to watch her progress.
