Emily Sonnett was a name known only to the members of her immediate family when she was a young girl. As a child growing up in Ohio, she used her spare time to help make cards and prints out from school and home printers. She also sewed clothes and made pillow cases from fabric scraps. As a teenager, she went on to play basketball and track and became an all-state track star. Now at the age of 23, she has become one of the rising stars in the women's footballing world.
Description Emily Ann Sonnett is a professional American football player who currently plays for the Washington Spirit of the National Women's Soccer League. She is originally from Youngsville, OH but has been living in Washington D.C. since 2021. At the start of this season, she was named the team's leading defender. The versatile defender is well suited for the position, as she is both strong and agile in the tackle and great on the wing.
As a member of the senior team, Sonnett has made over 20 appearances so far this season. Her statistics show that she is quite capable of making a good pass or tackling and is also fast and strong. This combination of skills makes her a very good candidate for the right to be on the bench for the USWNT. She has impressed coach Jill Ellis with her work ethic and attitude.
Sonnett started off her career with the University of Maryland. There she featured primarily as a defensive midfielder but also did some right back and defensive midfielder roles. After leaving college, she signed for the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the MLS. Injuries limited her to just six matches for the Rowdies before she was finally called up by the USA squad for the last few matches of the World Cup qualifying cycle.
Injuries have again struck the injury-weary midfielder. She missed the first half of the USA's clash with China and then the second half of their qualifying playoff against Mexico. But she made a remarkable comeback in the USA 3-1 win against Germany. Playing at right wing, she put in a wonderful performance, linking play well with Blessing and scoring the winning goal. It was a tough game for the Americans considering their depleted frontline but they thoroughly deserve credit for coming back from adversity. After bouncing back from such a big disappointment earlier this year, it's clear that Sonnett and the USA are capable of performing at the highest level when required.
Like many young Americans, she started playing soccer because her father gave her a chance. She started out playing on the defensive and was a standout player on the defensive side for the Maryland Terrapins. Now at the University of Virginia, she has excelled in the defensive department. It is no wonder that she is one of the favorites to be the next goalkeeper for the USWNT. All the best for Sonnett and the bright future ahead of her.
