Carli Lloyd was one of the most beloved characters of the Nickelodeon show, Barbie. She appeared in eight episodes, the most of any character in the show, and went through four love stories with three of them featuring her life. Her best story was entitled “The Champ” and told the story of how she fell in love with a boy in gym class. This turned out to be Matt Mattel's first introduction to the concept of cartoons. It also became his favorite, proving to be an important part of his early interests.
In the film, Barbie is shopping for furniture. One of the options she chooses is a bed set with a double bed and a dresser. As the shop assistant prepares the furniture, she forgets to take the screws off of one of the drawers, which leads to Mattel receiving a call from her boyfriend, Andrew. He tells her that she screwed the drawer, but he didn't tell her that she could go ahead and put another one on. This causes her to panic, but Mattel tells her it's okay and the two end up dating.
The first appearance of Carli is in the second season of the show, where she's working as a receptionist at an advertising agency. There, she meets her good friend, Ken (David Strathairn), who's also an avid Barbie fan. Carli and Ken hit it off and are often seen together, playing games such as Hide and Seek. They also start to date other people, such asctureylope.
The first episode of the third season saw Carli get into trouble when she shops at a department store with a man she doesn't know. She ends up letting him touch her dresser while buying a dress. This is when Mattel taps her to be a model for their doll collection called Barbie Playhouse. It turns out that she has been trying to get a job in this industry ever since her first appearance on television.
Carli has a number of breakouts throughout the show. In one episode, she's upset because Ken makes her stay late at work. In another, she screams at Ken for shaving his pubic hair. In the fourth, Carli gets angry after Ken forgets to clean his shoe before going to the bathroom. The reason why Carli gets so upset in almost every episode is because she feels like the person she's supposed to be knows she exists, but she can't ever break through the barrier.
Carli loves Barbie, but she hates the way she was made to look in the film. It makes her feel like a doll. Mattel has tried to make Carli a little more relatable by creating dolls that look like her. However, Barbie has always been Carli's fantasy. Even if she only had dreams about being a girl, she would've still loved the film.
