Catarina Macario was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At the age of eight, Macario moved with her parents to the United States to live in New York City. Her first love was basketball, playing both in the youth and senior leagues for both boys and girls. Macario made her debut for the Americans at the 2021 Women's Soccer Tournament in Chicago.
At the time, Macario was still known by her nickname “Papata”, given to her by her coach. However, after moving to Europe, she began to be known as Cari Raftera in Italy and then “Catrinha” in Brazil. Both names served to define her career, which spanned two continents and four different leagues over her five-year career. During that time, she also played for the likes of Italian giants Genoa and AC Milan as well as Brazilian side Internacional side Livorno.
Career accomplishments Throughout her career, Catarina Macario became one of the best known female footballers in Europe, playing for some of the biggest clubs in the world. She was capped numerous times for the US National Team, including being the face of the women's team for the gold medal match against Germany at the Olympic Games in 1996. Macario also played for the US during the World Cup tournaments in 1998 and the 2021 World Cup. During this time, she was also named the top player on the US squad for the infamous penalty kick against Germany in the quarter finals. Throughout her years in Europe, Macario won the FIFPro World Goalkeeper of the Year twice, the US Female Athlete of the Year three times and the Soccer Writers' FIFPro World Cup Player of the Year once.
After retiring, Macario turned towards coaching. She worked for the Brazilian club Internacional for a couple of years before joining MLS side Sporting Kansas City. While in Kansas City, she managed to help the team win the MLS title twice, the playoffs twice and the MLS Cup. It was in this time that she finally got to lift the MLS trophy, thus becoming the first ever woman to do so.
In recent times, Catarina Macario has remained busy, playing a variety of roles both on the field and off the field. She has coached the Brazilian side Fluminense before retiring, and is now an assistant to Sporting Kansas City head coach Peter Vermes. She is currently in negotiations with Italian side Sion – previously known as Perrinelle – in order to return to the Brazil soccer scene. However, reports in the Brazilian press have indicated that Macario is happy to return to Sporting Lisbon as they struggle in the league currently.
