Amy Wambach was born in Southern California. She played the defensive midfield during her years at Pepperdine University, where she also began a dance career. After college she joined the US National Team, which went on to represent the United States in the 1996 Olympics. Later in her career she played for several different teams in Europe and in 2021 she became a member of the British WSL side Arsenal Ladies.
In the lead up to the Olympics, Wambach experienced some injuries including a shoulder dislocation. Though not particularly serious, it prevented her from playing in the Olympics and limited her to making cameo appearances in the team's subsequent tournaments. It was a difficult time for Wambach however as the football world was abuzz with the idea that she may well have been a one-way bet to gold. Even with the support of her coach Ray Wilkins she continued to play down the idea. “I am a great competitor,” she said.
Wambach has always had a game plan for every game that she has played and in the years since she first stepped onto a football field many of those game plans have proven to be right. Her attributes as a player are legendary including her tenacity, courage and ability to make quick passes and complete passes. The speed that she possesses along with her awareness of the game is also notable. It is no surprise then that Amy Wambach has become a very well respected name in the world of American football.
