Alex Morgenthaler and Paul Davidson create an intriguing tale of conspiracy, personal betrayal and political maneuver in their book The Omega File. Morgenthaler does a good job of detailing the background of John B. Morgan and revealing details of the wealth and power which the Morgan fortune provided him through his secret meetings with Hitler. I personally found the personal character of Morgenthaler very believable. I felt a certain connection to Morgenthaler as he struggled to understand the complicated mind of Adolf Hitler. In one scene, Morgenthaler even correctly suspected that Hitler was a pseudonym for a real personage.
Alex Morgenthaler portrays Alex as a cautious man who is deeply suspicious of everyone in his life. This is a typical teenager a private who prefer to keep to himself and work at a private school instead of join the army – and it is a typical teenager. The fact that Alex works at a prep school, away from his family, gives him more time to pursue his own interests. His friends become a bit more accommodating, but not enough to let Alex know the full truth about his father's past.
Things take a turn for the worse when a janitor begins to disturb the students of the prep school and threatening to report them to the principal, unless they help him find the “black sock” that belongs to a certain student. It turns out that the “black sock” belonged to Alex's father. How did Alex react? He wants nothing to do with the story, but somehow – he has to find out.
At first Alex isn't sure what to do. He knows his father was a crook, but he also had a hard time of his own with his own father's money. Why is this problem linked to his biological father? Is it because Alex is a homosexual and his biological father was gay and Alex would be forced to come out of his comfort zone to accept his father's lifestyle or would it simply be because of parental conflict over money? Maybe, even a bit of both!
The characters in this novel are complex and well-developed. They're funny, engaging, mysterious, and heartbreaking. I would have loved to have seen Alex' parents and siblings as central characters in this story. That would have been a different sort of story and the way it is told would have been different, too.
Bottom line – read this book. You'll get something out of it. I would recommend it highly to a first time reader. For someone looking for a somewhat lighter read, this isn't it. But if you like historical fiction with a lot of suspense, intrigue, and romance, this book will be right up your alley!
