The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) is an international women's professional soccer league based in the United States, owned by the individual clubs. At the top of this league pyramid, it constitutes the highest level of the professional sport in the United States. Like the MLS, the US National Women's Soccer League also has a playoff system and qualification systems. In addition, the tournament includes all teams that qualified through the regular season play. The tournament was first held in 1998, with the champion coming from the US.
The National Women's Soccer League boasts four different conferences, the Eastern and Western Conference and the Central and Western Conference. The Western Conference, which is also known as the Power League, consists of teams that are from the Power Five conferences and the American Professional Soccer League. The Eastern Conference, on the other hand, is made up of teams that play in the United Soccer League. The Central and Western Conferences consist of teams that are in the United States Soccer Federation's (USL) Premier Development League. There are also teams in the Korean and Japanese Professional Soccer leagues.
The National Women's Soccer League invites soccer players from anywhere around the world and considers them players based upon their ability to play soccer. However, not all countries can fill the available slots for each conference. If a country is not eligible to be in a given conference, they have the option to join another league that is willing to accept them. When a country is added to the conference of their choice, they lose their current status and are forced to play in the other league unless they qualify for a break in service.
Every team must be registered before they can begin playing. Before a game, players must be certified by a player coach and a medical doctor. Players on the roster must also be certified by a team trainer and strength and conditioning coach in order to participate. Teams are allowed to select which players they wish to participate in a match and the rest of the team is required to agree with the selection.
Teams are required to have players who have the right mentality for the sport and the right skills. The National Women's Soccer League does not discriminate against gender when it comes to players. Any player who is born, whether male or female, are welcome to sign up. Also, players may transfer between teams at any time. Teams must practice in order to develop chemistry between players, as well as between coaches and players.
The National Women's Soccer League offers a variety of benefits to women interested in participating in this pastime. The league offers paid training camps, discounted tickets and merchandise. Other than that, the benefits offered to women in the women's soccer industry makes it one of the most lucrative industries in women's sports today.
