The role of the coach is as important in a player's development as the players themselves. Coaches can only do so much with the limited number of players they have and therefore are at a slight disadvantage when trying to mould them into a star player. A coach must be innovative, diligent and tactful all rolled into one as they are the ones who will train, motivate and direct the players.
It is not always easy to tell exactly where a player stands in form. With a great deal of different opinions on where a player stands, it becomes difficult to measure player performance accurately. However, there are certain criteria that a player should be able to meet to be considered in the top ten for their respective position. These are fitness, form, attitude and of course ranking.
Fitness is essential as it means a player has the right body structure to perform well in the sport. It also means that he is in good condition physically and mentally. Fitness standards are monitored through regular training and exercises by the team. Failure to meet the requirements results in the players being replaced or released from the team.
Form follows fitness as the most physical part of the body. If a player has the right fitness levels, he will probably stay fit and strong. A player with bad form would most likely find it very difficult to regain form and could even injure himself. Form is also influenced by a player's attitude as well as how determined he is to win the game.
Another way of viewing a player's overall performance is by looking at his individual rankings. The higher up a player goes, the more matches he will have participated in and therefore the better his results would be. Individual and team rankings are usually separate as a player can be ranked individually and as a team player his team rankings will usually reflect his performance. Team rankings help decide who plays in which team in a particular competition. Many times the players with the best results in a competition will also end up playing in the same side as their team's top player.
The coach is the main man in controlling the fitness of players through advising them on the right diet, what to do and not to do, on the exercises and so on. Players are encouraged to eat healthy and to get plenty of rest during the week. Playing regularly helps players become fitter and stronger enabling them to participate more confidently in each match. Consistent training over a long period helps players become better conditioned to perform well on the field.
