Recently, Julie has discovered that she is suffering from what is referred to as fibromyalgia. She has been researching it for quite a while and has a pretty good idea of what causes fibromyalgia. At the same time, her doctor hasn't found conclusive evidence linking the condition to any one thing. When Julie was in her early twenties, she developed what is sometimes referred to as a pre-adolescent crush – this was nothing more than the envy of another young woman, who was going through puberty at the time. This pre-adolescent crush eventually led to much more in her life than she dreamed possible.
It all changed when Julie went off to college and entered a different world. In order to be able to attend college, Julie had to get rid of something – her pre-adolescent crush. If it had not been for this “fibromyalgia itch”, Julie would have continued her studies and maybe even become an artist. Today, she has to deal with chronic pain every single day of her life. What's more, because fibromyalgia has such a negative stigma attached to it, Julie has often been refused help in seeking treatment by doctors, therapists, and other professionals.
As a result of the discrimination she feels every day, Julie isn't able to attend many of the medical conferences, educational meetings, and related lectures that are so important to those suffering from various conditions and diseases. When a similar situation arose a few years ago, Julie was actually quite surprised to find out how many fibromyalgia symptoms she still was experiencing! The realization hit Julie like a ton of bricks. There were no cures for fibromyalgia, yet there were plenty of people out there who were getting better. That made Julie feel even worse. Not only was she not getting the answers she needed from her doctor and other professionals, but she was also being told that there was no hope for her to ever get better because there was no real cure for her chronic pain.
When Julie went off to college to find out what she could learn about fibromyalgia, she found herself enrolling in classes specifically geared towards those diagnosed with fibromyalgia. At first, she felt weird and uncomfortable taking such classes, but she soon got used to them and saw how much they helped her. Nowadays, Julie takes part in short courses throughout the year that cover everything from alternative treatments for fibromyalgia to learning how to deal with certain lifestyle issues associated with chronic pain. While she still feels strange about it, seeing a therapist is something that Julie does on a regular basis. She doesn't have the energy to attend live classes any longer, but seeing videos and listening to lectures online makes her feel good and helps her remember why she went to therapy in the first place.
If all is going well, then Julie will hopefully graduate from her fibromyalgia roller coaster and reach the end of her long road to healing. Of course, things can't always be what they seem, and there are always hiccups along the way. One of the worst things that can happen to someone who is trying to heal is feeling too tired to do anything. When you're in pain, it's hard to do anything. This isn't the case for people who suffer from chronic pain, however, and if you're ready to take the steps towards recovery, this could be your best bet. You'll need to make time for yourself on a regular basis, and that's something that Julie has to learn to do.
While she still needs a lot of care, she's learned to manage her life and find a balance between being proactive and being reactive. Her coping mechanism is based on being able to see the bigger picture. She knows that if she doesn't take action, the pain will get worse before it gets better. Her approach also requires her to keep up with the latest research, whether it deals with alternative therapies or her own healing efforts. Even when Julie can't do the things that she needs to do to feel good, she knows that she has made progress and that she can do more.
