Her unselfish generosity and commitment to her community made her an outstanding local heroine. She was a tireless worker to establish a women-owned construction company in Cleveland, Ohio. In her many efforts, she became a sought-after public speaker and sought-after community leader.

Ohara was born in segregated Mississippi and grew up in segregated Cleveland. Her mother was a strong advocate of non-violent protests, including sit-ins and marches. Despite the backdrop of violence, Kelley was an avid reader and writer who cherished books. She always looked forward to growing older, learning more about herself and her fellow humans.

As a young girl, Kelley dreamed of someday becoming a doctor or working in the medical field. Her path was blocked by the color barrier in her mind and she was repeatedly told that she would never be able to join her classmates who were mostly white in a medical career because of her color. Kelley continued to dream about her goals for years, but could not figure out how to make those dreams come true. It was then that she learned about Ohara and her example. Turning that information into a non-profit organization called “The Ohara Foundation,” she began work on a book to honor her friend.

One of the most amazing things about Kelley Ohara was her courage to share her story and her love of humanity. Ohara was a tireless worker to establish a women-owned business. Her tireless energy and commitment to her community made her popular among her peers. She reached out to others with kindness and understanding. Her efforts led to the establishing of the ohara foundation today.

Ohara died at the age of 52 from complications arising from diabetes. Her untimely death left behind a legacy of service to Cleveland and her beloved community. The “Ohara Foundation” was established to continue her tireless work for a better tomorrow for children, women, people of color, and all who seek to establish successful businesses. The organization has grown into an incredible movement that continues to save the world.
